When Amalgam Collection sets out to make a scale model, they spare no expense. Think of the quality of their models to be comparable to the finest watches, and you get the idea of how some things are just worth the cost.
One of Amalgam’s latest offerings is the 2024 Ferrari 499P endurance racer. Various versions of this hypercar won at LeMans, Qatar, and the Circuit of the Americas, along with other podium finishes. And when we say they spare no expense, we’re not kidding. This model sells for over $21,000.
Attendees at the 2025 Spielwarenmesse, the International Toy Fair, got to see Amalgam Collections’ Aston Martin DB5 up close and personal. At 1/8 scale, it’s an impressive model just sitting there. But when you open it up to see all of the details and features, it becomes literally jaw-dropping The attention to detail and the micro engineering to create working parts such as door handles and window cranks is hard to fathom but clear for all to see.
The 499P is worthy of that treatment. Its design can be described as “form following function but it turns out that form is beautiful.” Countless hours went into perfecting the many aero bits on this car, with modifications required for the next track and the next. Similarly, Amalgam spent over 4,000 hours in design and development, requiring the approval of engineers at Ferrari before putting this work of art into production.
The sheer number of different surfaces and tiny but functional parts is staggering. As with all of their high-end models, the Ferrari comes with a clear display case, an elegant transporting box, white handling gloves, and a super soft brush for detailing the details. It is limited to just 499 copies.
There is a lot of carbon fiber in this design, all of it perfectly rendered in small scale. Every button, (and every label on every button), is clear and precisely rendered. Under the engine cover, which is held in place by functioning latches, the engine looks like it could actually run. There are metal pieces that have bluish discoloring from excessive heat, hundreds of wires and hoses and belts, and hundreds of little bits painstakingly assembled.
