Happy 2025, Diecast fans! If you made a resolution to buy fewer but better models, then we have the model car for you.
Behold this hyper-detailed model of a 1988 Marlboro McLaren MP4/4 Formula 1 racer like the ones driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost (it wears the number 12 of Senna). It’s made from the same fiberglass and carbon fiber material as the real thing and has an accurately detailed cockpit with safety harness, gauges, buttons, and shifter. The tires are also made of fiberglass, so not all the materials are accurate.
It’s a pretty big model, 177″ long by 84″ wide and 39″ tall, which puts it at… (calculating…) 1/1 scale! It’s listed as a “display model,” but doesn’t mention if it was an official McLaren prop made back in the ’80s or if it’s just somone’s idea of a really cool kit of one of the most dominant and iconic race cars of all time.
As of this writing, bidding is at $12.000, which would buy a lot of 1/64 scale cars. And since it’s listed on bringatrailer.com, it will likely go for big bucks. But if you resolved to go for quality over quantity as a collector this year, then this should get your new year rolling!

Fun “model!” I were a rich guy and F1 fanboy, I might buy it and hang it on a wall in an oversized garage or something.
I’ll never own all my favorite cars, even if I could afford it, just wouldn’t be logical. However, 1/1 scale models would be a way to fake it, still wouldn’t be cheap, but an acceptable compromise… still would require winning the lottery, though.
It’s a lot cheaper than owning the real car. And those old F1 cars are pretty finicky beastsl
