Life-Size Python Slithers onto Auction Stage

Many car enthusiasts began pursuing their passion at a miniature scale, playing with some sort of diecast cars. If you collected the original Hot Wheels cars, you have loved the Custom Beetle, Custom Corvette, or Custom Barracuda. And then one day, years later, you finally got a real one.

Some of those cars were based on one-of-a-kind show cars, leaving you out of luck later on. The Python, (originally known as the Cheetah, but that’s a whole ‘nother story), was one of those cars.

Mecum Auctions has a 1/1-scale custom Python slated to roll across the stage soon. It started as a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk, although there is almost no recognizable clue to the donor car. Over the course of 17 years, various components from a lot of other cars and quite a bit of hand fabrication turned it into a faithful interpretation of the original car.

Even though this one is an open top car, and the tops of the front fenders are open as well, the overall shape is unmistakable. The wedgy body and dramatically asymmetrical front end sort of mess with your perspective, which was one of the best features of the Hot Wheels version. It captures the lines of the original show car quite effectively.

For all the specs, visit Mecum’s site. Who knows, you might end up with the car of your childhood dreams!
