Do you remember the first time you saw the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future onscreen?
It wasn’t zooming along to 88 miles an hour. Nor was it disappearing amid flaming skid marks. No, it was rolling out of the back of a GMC delivery van in anticipation of those moments. Now Mattel Creations is recreating that moment… or at least they are about to recreate it.
The Back to the Future 40th Anniversary set includes a super-detailed DeLorean time machine. There have been umpteen variants of this model already, but this one comes inside Doc Brown’s van, which is a first in this scale. They come in a diorama replicating the late-night parking lot of Twin Pines Mall, which is pretty cool, but the packaging really sells it. The outer box looks like the back of the white van, and when the doors and ramp are opened, the diorama box features a photo of the rear of the DMC. So it’s kind of a car inside a van inside a car inside a van.
All of this for $32.00. Considering most single vehicles from Mattel Creations go for that kind of money, this is a steal.
Mattel missed an opportunity here, though. Wouldn’t these vehicles make a terrific addition to the Team Transport series of race cars and their haulers? Collectors have been making their own versions of this concept, albeit with other types of vans since the GMC wasn’t available until now.
The Mattel Creations BTTF 40th Anniversary set goes on sale July 24 at 9:00 am PT. Go ahead and program that date into your calendar, or your time machine if you have one. It’s sure to become a thing of the past in an instant.
