In the early to mid-‘90s, Volkswagen’s marketing department was on a roll to rival their wildly popular ad campaigns from the ‘60s. For a trade show in 1995, they painted the body, doors, hood, heck, every body panel different colors to show off all the hues they offered that year.
It caused such a stir that they would offer a real production version you could buy. There were actually four different variants of the Harlequin Golf, with the yellow, turquoise, blue, and red panels swapping places for each version.
Matchbox has a new version in 1/64-scale coming out soon. It’s part of the wildly popular Mattel Creations line and will go on sale at 9 pm PT on October 16.
