MCHOF’22: Brooklin Models Has a History of Great Diecast

Brooklin_Models_adBrooklin Models will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2024, which is a long time, but for them, it feels kind of short. As they approach that milestone, The Model Car Hall of Fame thought they would be a good choice as Historic Brand of the Year for 2022.

Many companies can boast of their humble roots, but Brooklin Models set out from the start to be audacious. Their model vehicles have always been highly detailed, relatively limited in production, and never cheap. They started off as a premium brand at a premium price. And as nice as those original models were, the quality of details and materials has only gotten better. For instance, their earliest models didn’t have windows in clear plastic, tires were made of white rubber. By the late 1979s, they had figured out how to make those parts work.

Brooklin Models’ original focus was on American cars from the 1930s through the 1960s. All of them are hand-crafted, and hand-built. Some were icons of the car industry, such as the 1930 Ford Model A, 1934 Chrysler Airflow, and the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Famous one-offs or concept cars, such as the 1938 Phantom Corsair were also among early offerings. Since then, Brooklin has stuck close to the script, with the exception being some classic European marques and models.

Just about every component of their 1/43 masterpieces is cast in white metal, then meticulously finished and painted by hand. It’s been that way since 1974, although CAD and 3D printing are now part of the design process. The result is a heavy, detail-laden bit of craftsmanship. Considering the rarity of the final product, these models are worth every penny of their prices, often retailing for $200 to $500.

For their ongoing dedication to the craft of model car making, Brooklin Models is the Model Car Hall of Fame’s choice for Historic Brand of 2022.
