Ferrari is a company known for flaunting unlimited resources to take on their competition on the race track and win, win, win. And somehow all that performance comes wrapped in such beautiful shapes. No wonder their cars have always been stratospherically priced.
In the mid-1960s Ferrari decided to scale back their ambitions a bit, at least in one area. Enter Dino, a nameplate created to build and sell some slightly less expensive cars to compete with more attainable European sports cars like Porsche was building.
For a few years, Ferrari built the Dino as less expensive car, but no one was really fooled by the sub-brand name or marketing. AutoCult, usually known for their models of really odd or obscure cars takes on the Dino 206 GT design and the results are up to their always high specifics. It’s one of the more mass-produced cars ever taken on by AutoCult, and the results are worthy of being declared the Model Car Hall of Fame 1/43-Scale Model of the Year.
Buyers weren’t really put off by the marketing. A Ferrari is a Ferrari no matter what you call it, and fans happily paid less until prices caught up with the rest of the marque’s’ values. And quite frankly, the Pininfarina design was one of the most beautiful yet friendly cars ever to come out of Italy.
In a way, the Dino was almost a failure to achieve its goals, considering the intent was to build a more basic, budget-friendly car that ended up an enduring classic. Maybe that’s why AutoCult decided it was their kind of car, resulting in the Model Car Hall of Fame’s 2024 1/43-Scale Model of the Year.
