Designing and building cars in Lego has always required some measure of compromise. It’s a fun compromise, to be sure: the models require some ingenuity and imagination to faithfully recreate a specific car, not a perfect replica, but almost a building-block caricature of something bigger. The recent Lego Icons Lamborghini Countach is a car that requires almost no squinting or stretching to see exactly what it represents.
For that accomplishment, the Lego Lambo is the Model Car Hall of Fame Brick Set Model of the Year for 2024.
Some of the larger models from Lego contain compound curved and angled pieces that almost feel like cheating, especially when those parts are designed for that specific model. The Countach, on the other hand, is straight out of the parts bin and looks amazing.
The straight, severe lines of the later Countach models are almost effortless to recreate in Lego form. No special, bespoke parts were needed here, and there isn’t much compromise in detail. The Countach was born to be made into a Lego model. Incredibly, the scissor doors open and close with precision, and the complexity of the taillights was no simple feat to create.
In fact, Lego has released a similar, smaller Lambo in Minifig scale, and what small amount of detail it loses is made up for in charm and playability. Both models come in a very 1980s white, and you can almost hear the rumbling engine and Miami Vice-era soundtrack when you look at them. The bigger Icons Lamborghini Countach gets the nod here as the Model Car Hall of Fame Brick Set Model of the Year.
