Is there a race car more beautiful than the Porsche 917? Is there any team livery more iconic than the simple blue and orange Gulf scheme? When the two are combined, it’s majestic. When you consider how successful the 917 and Gulf were, it’s almost unfair to have to compete against them.
It’s almost impossible to add to that mystique, but when Pocher makes a large-scale model, it only increases the legend. So it’s no surprise the Pocher 1/8-scale Porsche 917 is the Model Car Hall of Fame Kit of the Year for 2024.
Pocher spares no effort to replicate every detail, especially under the hood. In fact, so much of the engine is visible from the rear and under the body, that an opening hood is almost unnecessary. Even the bottom of the chassis, which is essentially a smooth surface, shows every seam and bolt present in the real car.
The sheer number of parts is impressive. The materials and textures feel eerily real. And at this size, it almost is.
This kit isn’t for the faint of heart or budget. And don’t expect to finish this model in a weekend. With all those details and delicate assemblies, any builder can take a lot of pride in finishing this kit. And that’s why it’s the Model Car Hall of Fame Kit of the Year for 2024.
