My Family Owned These Cars. Now I Want Them as Well!

Ron Ruelle model car hall of fame
by Ron Ruelle

I was looking through some old family photos and realized there are a lot of cars from my family history that I don’t have models of. And now I suddenly want them.

Here’s a rundown of the cars my parents owned during my lifetime, along with notes regarding available models of them. I’ll cut some slack for the exact year or exact model if they’re close. Bonus points if there are models in the same color.

Also, these cars are listed in order of their date of manufacture, not when my family owned them.

1952 Chevy Pickup (Many to choose from. Hot Wheels made the La Troca lowrider version, and then the stock version as well. None in black with lots of dents and patina, however.)

1966 Ford Mustang Fastback (So many to choose from, but Hot Wheels did one in the same maroon as the one my Dad bought for his mid-life crisis when I was in high school.)

1969 VW Karmann Ghia (Lots of Ghias available, including a Johnny Lightning model in the same green.)

1971 Chevy Caprice Wagon (AutoWorld offers a 1969 Kingswood model, close enough.)

1972 VW Bus (Too many to mention, but Matchbox made an orange and white one that is dead on.)

1974 VW Beetle (Tons of them… oh wait)… with a JC Whitney 1940 Ford nose job (Amazingly, AMT offered a kit of this car. And while the Ford’s nose looked cool and appropriate, those stupid boxy Rolls Royce noses did not.)

1976 Plymouth Gran Fury Wagon (Nope.)

1980 Ford F-150 Pickup (Plenty of models from that era, including a nice one from Hot Wheels.)

1980 Dodge Omni (Motor Max offered one in red, like the one I drove in high school, as part of the Fresh Cherries series of not-so-great but popular cheap cars.)

1986 Mazda GLC (SAPI Models offers the JDM version of this car, the Familia. Close enough.)

By that time, I was out of college, and no longer living in the basement, so I don’t have as many detailed memories of their rides since then. I wish I had models of all of them, though. That would be a hoot. If you know of any models that I didn’t list, please let me know in the comments!

Also, I’ll be compiling another list like this soon, of just the cars I have owned over the years. It’s a cooler list than you’d think! (Update… here it is!)
