Well, Revell has the kit for you! Over the last few years, Revell has released a series of advent calendars in car kit form. Or would that be a series of car kits in advent calendar form?

New for 2024 is the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 Advent Kit, a 1/24 scale model with a catch… The large box has various panels to break open, revealing a sprue of parts, or some paint, or a few stickers, or a tool, or the instructions. The first pile of parts likely won’t be enough to finish step one, so builders will have a tantalizing (or antagonizing) wait for the next set of pieces.

Not the James Bond advent kit, but this is how the daily doors work.

Even though it’s molded in appropriate colors and utilizes snap-together techniques, the daily process allows the builder to spend extra time painting the details and carefully sanding and refining pieces for perfection. In the end, that  could result in a perfectly finished model.

Previous editions have featured various Porsche and Volkswagen models, as well as farm equipment, Star Wars ships and other themes. The DB5 includes working gadgets, by the way,

At around $40, it’s more expensive than the average kit, but the presentation is worth it C’mon, you’ve been good this year, right? Order yours today to get it in time for step one on December 1. Just don’t get mad if that day’s reveal is a paintbrush or a sticker sheet. It’s better than a lump of coal.

  1. While I love this idea, my mind wonders who their target audience is. A “serious” builder probably won’t appreciate the novelty of the daily cadence, because many of us build out of order of the instructions. A collector minded person won’t want to open the box, which is what makes this special. A novice builder may balk at the price over a traditional kit. I hope this does well though, because I do love the novelty.
