It’s been a good year for the Volvo P1800 in diecast. Hot Wheels now offers a 1/64 diecast model of a Gasser version of the car, and now Norev has just released one in 1/18. Even Corgi recently re-released a version of their 1/43 model from the TV show “The Saint.”
The P1800 fills a similar spot in the sports car world as the VW Karmann Ghia. Beautifully sculpted, sporty lines, just enough room for a couple of adults and two tiny passengers, and well… slow.
Neither car was ever designed with high performance in mind. But driving a sporty-looking car of that size always feels faster. And let’s not forget… holy cow both are gorgeous. While VW offered a cabriolet of their car, Volvo opted to add a sleek shooting break to the lineup. Boy, it would be really nice to see more diecast of that car.
Oh wait… Norev does in fact offer that option! Some would argue that the wagon-esque P1800ES is the better-looking of the two cars, and certainly the more practical.
Norev’s versions of both cars capture the exterior styling nicely. Unfortunately, with a lack of opening features, we only get a glimpse of the interior and only under-chassis views of the engine bay. Still, this is a welcome development for those who love slow Swedish sports cars.
